IOJI Provides Input on the Draft Government Regulation on Mangroves

Mangroves are a part of the blue carbon ecosystem. Their sustainability must be maintained and restored sustainably.

As a follow-up to the seminar and launch of IOJI study “Strengthening Blue Carbon Ecosystem Governance in Indonesia” in January 2023, IOJI has provided input on the Draft Government Regulation on the Protection and Management of Mangroves (Draft Regulation on Mangroves). Some key issues suggested by IOJI in the Draft Regulation on Mangroves include:

  1. Strengthening the designation of mangrove ecosystem functions in spatial planning and zoning
  2. Enhancing the effectiveness of institutions and their roles at the regional level
  3. Ensuring sustainable access for communities managing mangroves
  4. Incentive and disincentive schemes
  5. Strengthening monitoring mechanisms and law enforcement
  6. Mechanisms for utilizing environmental funds and innovative funding sources
IOJI conveyed its input on the Draft Government Regulation on the Protection and Management of Mangroves (Draft Regulation on Mangroves) at the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM) on February 16th.

IOJI and ICEL Support the FOLU Net Sink 2030 Policy through Rapid Regulatory and Institutional Assessment

To achieve Indonesia’s climate targets and commitments as outlined in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and Long-Term Strategy on Low Carbon and Climate Resilience (LTS-LCCR) 2030, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) is preparing the Forestry and Other Land Use Net Carbon Sink policy by 2030. IOJI, along with the Indonesian Center for Environmental Law (ICEL) and KLHK, is conducting a Rapid Regulatory and Institutional Assessment (RRIA) for the FOLU Net Sink 2030 to identify the potential strengthening of legal, policy, and institutional aspects of the FOLU Net Sink 2030.
